Ancient Greece Government and Sparta/Athens



Learning Goals:
I can interpret the role the four types of government play in Ancient Greece
I can compare and contrast the Greek city-states of Athens and Sparta

Today, students completed the Ancient Greek government quiz.  After the quiz students began to build their knowledge of Athens and Sparta.  Students will use their knowledge of Athens and Sparta to participate in a debate next week.

Today, the students completed the government stations.  After the stations students reviewed with their table teams for the quiz tomorrow. Students have discussed and reminded of every question on the quiz.

Today, Mr. Timm led the students through advantages and disadvantages of rash government.  Next, students moved from station to station completing an activity to understand the differences in each government.  This will help prepare students for the quiz on Friday.

QOD - What are 3 types of architecture discussed yesterday in class?  What style of columns are on the White House?  Why are U.S. government modeled after Ancient Greece?

Today, Mr. Timm presented important information on the definition, advantages and disadvantages for each government.  This will be essential to understanding the four types of government. Students were expected to fill out a graphic organizer to use for review.

Today, Mr. Timm presented the Ancient Greece vocabulary to the students. The following is the list of vocabulary words that students will need to achieve a level 3 on the proficiency scale.  Vocabulary - legacy, Democracy, Tyranny, Monarchy, Oligarchy, Jury, Polis, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Acropolis, Phalanx, philosophy

Today, students discussed and completed their maps of Ancient Greece, due Monday.  Students began learning a set of vocabulary words to prepare them for the three learning goals.  Students received their study packets and tests for possible retakes.

Today, students will have the first fifteen minutes of class to complete their test.  After the test, students will begin working on a map to understand the geography and climate of Greece.  In the upcoming weeks, Mr. Timm, the student teacher will be take a greater role in the classroom.

Ancient China Test

I can interpret the impact of the philosophies on daily life in Ancient China

Today, students will apply their knowledge of government, philosophies, and different social classes in Ancient China.  All students will have an opportunity to retake if necessary.  After the test, students will participate in the Iowa Youth Straw Poll along with the other grades at Excelsior.

Today, students put together study packets and discussed some important information for the test on Wednesday.  Next, students used devices and iPads to play Kahoot to review for the test.

Han Mind Map and Rebellion

Learning Goal: I can explain the different forms of government in Ancient China

QOD - Create two quiz questions over any information since winter break.


Today, students created a new mind map for the Han Dynasty that lasted 400 years. In the middle of class students had a paper ball fight. At the end they had to pick up a ball and answered the questions. If they answered correctly, they claimed the Mandate of Heaven. If students didn't complete their mind map it was homework.  Students will review both dynasties tomorrow.

QOD - Which of the three philosophies would you follow and why?

I choice Confucianism because it helped the Han dynasty last for 400 years and I agree with the values of respecting elders and being hired based on your ability.

Today, students competed with their table team to answer student-created questions about the Han and Qin dynasties.  After the activity students completed a exit slip that asked students to match a factual statement to the correct dynasty.

Today, students were introduced to the new student teacher Mr. Timm from Coe College.  He will be working with the students until March 2nd.  It will be a learning experience for everyone.  Next, students will create a mind map for the Qin Dynasty to help students organize the information.

Philosophies of Ancient China

Today, students switched their social classes illustrations with a partner to label the correct person.  Next, students read an article and complete a graphic organizer to compare the three philosophies of Ancient China.  The philosophies are Daoism, Confucianism, and Legalism.  Students will finish this assignment on Friday in class.

Today, students will create illustrations to represent the social classes of the Shang dynasty of Ancient China.  At the end of class students will watch part of a video on Chinese Dynasties.

New Year's Resolutions and Geography Bee

Today, students competed in the Geography Bee.  First round all students answered the same two questions.  If a student got both answers correct, they moved to the second round.  Second round will consist of individual questions until only two students remained in each class remained.  The winner moves on to compete against the other grade levels.
