Manor Project
Review:
Life after the fall of the Roman Empire -
In the later Middle Ages, people began to refer to the period following the Roman collapse as the Dark Ages. The early Middle Ages were “dark” compared to Rome’s “light.” Following the fall, most Europeans lived life as before without realizing the empire ceased to exist. However, the transition to the Middle Ages had long been underway. Major migrations collapsed the Roman frontier, economy, and defenses. As the empire disintegrated, people placed themselves under the protection of powerful strongmen creating the feudal system. At the same time, urban areas depopulated, skilled workers became peasant farmers, and learning centers forgot how to learn. As a result, feudalism formed, the cities collapsed, and classical learning lost resulting in a dark age.
Today, students started working on their medieval manor projects. Below is the rubric and an example for the manor project. Students will be sketching the buildings, people and land that make up a manor. It will be due next Thursday. Monday students will receive a copy of the essay test questions.

Finish Checking Feudal Life Interactive and Medieval Life Inferencing
Review What is a manor?
The medieval manor was an agricultural estate. It was usually comprised of tracts of agricultural land, a village whose inhabitants worked that land, and a manor house where the lord who owned or controlled the estate lived. Manors might also have woods, orchards, gardens, and lakes or ponds where fish could be found. On the manor lands, usually near the village, one could often find a mill, bakery, and blacksmith. Manors were largely self-sufficient.
Today, students corrected their Feudal Life Interactive packet with the whole group. Students also practiced making inferences about life on a manor. The worksheet will be due at the beginning of class tomorrow.
